Religion is the opiate of the peopleBy Daniel Rivero Horie How can something that was created to spread good will be bad? This is the premise of the well-known phrase “Religion is the opiate of the people,” by Karl Marx. In the world, where even the best intentions can turn bad, it is common to find people trying to use others’ beliefs for their own benefit. Someone’s hope and naiveté can become someone else’s tool of persuasion and control. In the book Animal Farm, there are some passages that involve the use of, in this case, animals’ beliefs, to persuade individual interpretations and take them in some specific direction that may sound good, but in the execution usually create the opposite outcome. An example of this is when Moses the raven appears on the farm and says: “Up there, just on the other side of that dark cloud that you can see –there it lies, Sugarcandy Mountain, that happy country where we poor animals shall rest for ever from our labours!” This is the hope of the working class animals to get something back for all the hard work made in their lives, even without knowing if all the sacrifice made will bring them the promised Utopia they’re waiting for. Religion is a delicate topic for many people, is the side of people that keep them doing good things through the guidelines of the Bible. In some way, all passages of the Bible are stories that are used by people as examples of how a person unfolds himself/herself in the society. The Bible shows all the faces that a person has, and digs very deeply in the how supposedly began modern society and the rules by which this is governed. When a person has control of religion, he/she has control of the people that follow that religion. The influence that this person exercises on people depends on the supposed mission that this person has as a goal. Having said this, many people can follow blindly the words of this person no matter how reasonable or unreasonable are these words. Manipulation of the people by a person or group of persons through religion is a common thing these days. An example of this is when politicians, orators, and the media as television, radio, advertisements, etc. uses in some way religion to establish a connection with the people, and create a good image making a link with god to get some of the positives attributes that the name of god has in the society. A more extreme example is when a leader commands blasphemously in the name of god acts of terrorism against people to make public their position. Every year, hundreds of attacks are made by suicide bombers that give their lives in favor of the cause their leader or group is commanding. These kinds of situations are usually made by people considered religious fanatics. These people really feel proud of their actions, and feel that their life will be awarded for their sacrifice in name of god whose existence more than a fact is a thing of faith, faith taken by the mouth of a sick mind to create chaos and disaster. Just like drugs and people; religion, hope and people, are things that mixed may result in a placebo. Many people blame religion as the source of most conflicts in the world, but religion is only a way to disseminate a message, and it is used by some persons to get a major influence over the people.
